Why Rarity??

Rarity has been a character I always felt a connection with, when her generation of MLP came out I was in high school and had started to pursue sewing much more seriously. At the time I had wanted to open my little boutique and sell custom designs, though it hasn’t happened yet I am still slowly saving to make that goal a reality.

How I made this Cosplay:

The first debacle in making this dress was deciding on fabrics, I couldn’t decide what would be the best. With her sense of style and sophistication, almost any material would work for this dress. I ended up choosing a pearly white fabric with a slight satin sheen for the skirt and used a white-on-white brocade from my wedding stash for the bodice.

The Bodice- Starting with a basic bodice block it was easy to alter the neckline and add the folded trim to the top, to structure the bodice I opted out of using bones as I wanted this dress to be the more comfortable and effortless side of things. Instead, I used lightweight interfacing to line the bodice and give it some structure. This worked incredibly well and gave me a better range of motion when walking around and posing for photos.

The Skirt- I knew I wanted a very flowy and semi-opulent skirt, after some measuring and using a circle skirt calculator I cut out 2 circles, sliced each one down a side, then merged them. After this making sure the skirt and bodice connected cleanly was the next obstacle.

The 2 skirt seams were lined up with the bodice side seams, to adjust for the zipper as well as get the dress over my head the very back of the skirt had to be split just a little at the waist to accommodate my bust. Once finished it was easy to sew the zipper and smooth everything out with a quick steam.

Ending Thoughts

If I were to make this dress again I would want to add a few more easter eggs to her design, like a baby blue petticoat to give the skirt a little bit more volume. The zipper back is comfortable enough, though I have noticed it sometimes feels tight on my bloated days.
