Why Betty Boop??

Growing up my dad and I used to watch old cartoons all the time, one of my favorites to watch with him was Betty Boop. I adored the style, music, and comedy from the time, Betty was confident, something I wished I could be as a kid.

When Dante and I found this dress in our local Antique shop we were in awe, at first I was skeptical about it fitting me, my measurements aren’t exactly common. Yet as I got it into the dressing room and found it had been well taken care of and the old zipper had been replaced it felt like it was meant to be. This dress fit like a glove, perfect for the style of Betty.

Location

Betty was shot in our WV move, we didn’t know the area very well and it was hard choosing a possible location to take her. The more we thought about it, the more we wanted to shoot in a theatre to give a bit of homage to Betty Boops Origin, Esther Lee “Baby Esther” Jones, who was a well-known Jazz singer from Harlem.

After searching the web about nearby towns we selected the Morgantown Theatre, we emailed back and forth for a little bit before setting up a one-hour slot to get in and get photos. Thankfully the theatre was having work done at this time, so we didn’t have to worry about patrons walking around.

Ending Thoughts

I’m really happy that I was able to do my own little Betty shoot, I’ve come a long way from the timid insecure little girl who used to watch her on TV.
